- ChatGPT was launched by OpenAI in November, 2022 and other similar tools are now available·
- People are using it--According to a Salesforce report, in September, 2023 (just 10 months after launch) 45% of the US population was using generative AI, with use inversely correlated with age–Gen Z was at 70%·
- Businesses are using it--A Gartner poll in October 2023 found that 55% of businesses were piloting or using generative AI compared to only 19% just six months earlier·
- “If someone tells you they can reliably detect work done by AI they are lying.”
Keeping students from using AI inappropriately·
- Emphasize process more than product, including feedback and revision loops·
- Focus on analysis, critical thinking, creativity, and application of concepts to personal or otherwise unique situations/issues/problems·
- Include oral presentations and discussions·
- Develop and discuss Academic Integrity specifically regarding AI
Teaching students to use AI appropriately·
- Using AI to help with studying and learning·

- Introduction to Prompt Engineering·
- Creating drafts of lesson plans, assignments, exams, rubrics and other materials in preparation for class (ChatGPT, Gemini, Khanmigo, MagicSchool)·

- NEVER submit private student data or other propriety data in prompts
- Always remember that AI is a tool, not a solution·
- Apply Critical Thinking to outputs

- Check for bias
- Check logic and analysis·
- Cite output from AI as such·
