Khanmigo Learner Mode

Khanmigo Learner mode is an AI tutoring and resource center for students that was launched in March, 2023 and is built on the teaching resources of Khan Academy and the most current version of ChatGPT.  The options for student interaction are numerous (see the list at right taken from Khanmigo as of 3/15/24) and growing.   A recent article in Fast Company indicates that, just one year after launch, there are about 65,000 students in 53 school districts using Khanmigo--and they expect to expand to 500,000 to 1 million students for Fall, 2024.

While most of the resources in Khan Academy are free (consistent with their mission "to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere"), there is a charge of $4 per month per account (teacher, student, parent, whoever) to cover the cost of Khanmigo being built on the most recent version of ChatGPT.  Announcements from Khan Academy have hinted that they are trying to reduce that (optimally to zero) and districts are encouraged to contact Khan Academy for district pricing.

Compliance with privacy expectations and requirements, especially with respect to student data, is a requirement of any solution to be used with students and Khan Academy has strong Privacy Policy, which includes a process for creating school accounts consistent with school privacy requirements, and a long history of working with schools to ensure compliance with school, State, and Federal privacy requirements.   As an example, Khan Academy does show up as compliant on the Educational Software Hub for the State of Connecticut (you will need to create an account and sign in to search the Hub).

An important perspective/feature of Khanmigo for students is that it should "act like a good tutor" in that it doesn't generally provide complete answers to students (though it will do that for teachers), but instead responds to student questions with questions and prompts trying to get the student to discover the answer through reason and research--it seeks to be more Socratic than simply spitting out answers.
